Energising Britain: a day with the people turning climate ambition into practical action

At a time when it is easy to feel despondent about the climate, it was good to spend a day with people quietly getting on with trying to fix it.

Energising Britain South West filled M Shed on 6 July 2026, one of five events staged across England by the Local Net Zero Hubs with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero since July 2024, sent a message to all five: change on this scale needs people far beyond central government.

The day

The day packed a lot in: five themed sessions, community lightning talks, and visioning workshops run by Climate Outreach and the Young Foundation. 'It Makes Life Better' brought community leaders together to show what happens when climate work starts with people and place rather than targets and technology.

The Creative Clean Power Pilot session, chaired by the West of England Combined Authority's creative economy lead, showed how The Bottle Yard Studios and Power Logistics are bringing mobile clean power to film, television and live events. Between sessions, electric ferries carried delegates out to the floating ecosystem at Capricorn Quay and the harbour's water source heat pump.

What we made

Alongside the event film at the top of this page, we delivered a set of individual interviews from the day for the Hub team's ongoing use, and short cuts for their social channels.

The message from the sessions was blunt: invest in communities and you do not just deliver climate projects - you tackle inequality, build resilience and create leaders.

Rev. David Moss of the North Severnside Benefice wanted to keep his church open and useful to the people around it; the answer, in the end, was an air source heat pump. The day was full of stories like his.
